Description & Analysis

This is the most commonly seen San Francisco Mint half dime across all grades. Even a fair number of gems exist to satisfy the series specialist or advanced type collector.

The mintage of this date appears to have been about evenly divided between coins having their mintmarks either above or below the bow. The latter were presumably coined later, as the entire issue of 1871 S half dimes were of the "within wreath" style.
