Description & Analysis

1863 was a year in which Americans mostly had to do without coins. Gold and silver were hoarded or exported, and even the lowly cent was squirreled away as a precious commodity. The 18,000 currency strikes of the half dime produced by the Philadelphia Mint were thus intended primarily to pay off odd amounts on silver deposits at the mint and to keep the proofs from becoming objects of speculative trading. Few circulated at the time and, while this date is scarce overall, a disproportionate number of the survivors are Mint State.
