The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1888-O has become much more available in recent years due to the discovery of specimens in Europe. As recently as four or five years ago, it was nearly unobtainable above MS 61, but a number of MS 62s have since been graded. It is still a very scarce issue in MS 63 and the 1888-O eagle remains unknown in any grade higher.
