Description & Analysis

An extremely rare With Motto eagle. The '79-O is one of the major rarities in the ten-dollar series. It is a significant coin in that it is the first eagle struck in the New Orleans mint after an 18-year lapse in production occasioned by the Civil War and its aftermath. It also has the second lowest mintage of any eagle from this mint, with only 1,500 pieces produced. Possibly only 35-40 pieces survive in all grades according to the Winters-Cutler reference. This issue was missing from the Garrett Collection and Amon Carter did not have one either. Eliasberg's was only VF 20, and Norweb had an AU 50.
