Description & Analysis

In the mid-1860s, the Philadelphia Mint annually produced only minimal numbers of eagles. Since gold coins did not circulate except in the far west, and double eagles were preferred for export and reserve purposes, mintages of the remaining gold denominations were limited. The 1865 has a typically minuscule production of 3,980 business strikes, along with just 25 proofs. The 1865 is also noteworthy as the final No Motto Philadelphia issue. Although gold coins did not circulate for more than a decade after the Civil War, most 1865 eagles eventually did enter commerce, since every grade between Fine 12 and AU58 is represented by at least one NGC or PCGS example.
