The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Only 14,500 1856-O eagles were struck and, astonishingly, less than one percent of that total has survived to this day. Most of the extant pieces reside at the VF level and many are impaired in some manner. Over the past century, even advanced collectors had no choice but to compete for ownership of Almost Uncirculated specimens.
