The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Like the 1848 and 1852, the 1856 (60,490 pieces produced) is a scarce coin in all grades that becomes undeniably rare above the Mint State threshold. All three of these issues are offered less frequently than the 1847, 1849, 1850, 1853, and 1855.
