The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
While the Morgan dollar issues of the 1890s garner most collector attention, informed gold specialists realize that far fewer Mint State survivors represent the S-mint half eagles of the same decade. A typical example is the 1896-S delivery. Despite a sizeable mintage of 155,400 pieces, extensive circulation has reduced the typical survivors of this issue to the median circulated grades.
