Description & Analysis

Scarce and underappreciated, the Large Date is often overshadowed by its Small Date counterpart. However, both are rarities in their own right. The Small Date is the rarest C-mint half eagle, while the Large Date is the fifth rarest in the series. Total mintage for the 1842-C half eagles of both varieties was 28,184 coins (according to most references, with the 2012 Guide Book recording a total of 27,432). Of this total, it is generally accepted that almost 84% of these were the Large Date variety. However, according to Doug Winter, approximately 60% of the total known population are the Large Date variety.

Only 80-90 pieces are believed known today in all grades with perhaps as few as five or six in Uncirculated condition.
