The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The reported mintage of this first-year-of issue Capped Bust to Left design type was 51,605 pieces. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, discussing the 1807 Capped Bust Left in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, 1795-1933, write that ?circulated examples are easily obtained across all grade levels, and even Mint State examples can be found with ease. The usual Mint State grade falls at MS62 or MS63, gems are very rare.?
