The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Only 4,078 pieces were struck and the 1852-D is one of the half dozen rarest Dahlonega quarter eagles. There are 75-85 pieces known with 15-18 in About Uncirculated and five or six in Uncirculated. Beginning with this issue, the quality of strike for Dahlonega quarter eagles worsens appreciably.
