The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Although 1849 was the year of the California Gold Rush, much of that gold had not yet reached the Philadelphia Mint and so only 23,294 quarter eagles were struck. 1849 would be the last year of such a low mintage. The next year Philadelphia would strike 10 times that number, and in 1851 more than a million quarter eagles were struck. Examples of this issue are seldom seen in Mint State.
