The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Some 115-125 pieces are believed extant today of the 1848-C out of an original mintage of 6,788 pieces. While a fairly common coin in lower grades, the '48-C is difficult to locate above the XF level. Even if one were to encounter a Mint State representative, the eye appeal would most likely be limited due to poor striking characteristics.
