The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1840 Liberty Head quarter eagle boasts a mintage of just 18,859 pieces, small in comparison to most denominations, but nominal in the context of the series. The year saw the first use of Gobrecht's Liberty Head design, and the date is prized by type collectors today, but few examples were saved by the general public at the time of issue. Examples in Choice Mint State condition are very rare, as reflected by the population data.
