The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
This is quite a rare coin in an absolute sense and even more so in high grades. This is thanks in large part to a tiny mintage of 2,800 pieces, and in even larger part to the wholesale melting of all gold coins that took place in the early 1830s when the intrinsic value of the gold in U.S. coinage exceeded the face value. Not more than 50 pieces are believed to exist in all grades.
