The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Since Peace Dollars had already started to accumulate in government vaults, the Denver Mint refrained from producing any coins in 1924, and the number of coins struck at San Francisco fell to 1.7 million pieces. Unlike the 1922-S, 1923-S, and 1926-S, the 1924-S did not emerge from storage at the San Francisco Mint in significant quantity, and only a few bags seem to have entered the numismatic market in the 1950s. Today, the '24-S remains an elusive issue, particularly at the Gem level of preservation.
