The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
A moderately scarce Morgan issue, the '02-S is an issue that has a history of availability in roll quantity over the past sixty years. However, these coins are usually of inferior quality with very few Gems available for the advanced collector. One defect that should be mentioned that is common to many '02-S dollars are roller marks. Sometimes the rollers that were used to reduce the thickness of planchet stock prior to striking was scored. These striations or roller marks were then transferred to the planchet stock after it was reduced, and remained on the planchets after they are punched out of the sheets of metal. In turn, the roller marks remained on the struck coin if the striations were especially deep or if the coin was not fully struck, being most apparent on the weakest portion of the design.
