The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Prior to the 1930s, the '01-O was virtually unobtainable in Mint State, this despite a sizeable delivery of 13.3 million pieces. Beginning in that decade, however, quantities emerged from storage in the Philadelphia Mint and the Treasury building. The largest releases came in 1953 and 1962, after which the '01-O became a common Morgan Dollar at most levels of Mint State preservation.
