Description & Analysis

Along with the 1884-S, the 1886-O, and the 1896-O, the 1901 is one of the great conditional rarities within the Morgan dollar series. Close to seven million pieces were struck, a production much greater than the 1899, which is plentiful in quality Mint State. The 1901 is available for little more than its bullion value in VG, but becomes scarce in AU, and Mint State pieces are rare. At the MS64 level, the 1901 emerges as one of the keys to the set, more difficult than the 1889-CC. Since Morgan dollars were never popular on the East coast, it is unlikely that the entire issue went into circulation. Instead, the 1901 was presumably a participant in the vast Pittman Act melts.
