The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
In lower Mint State grades, the 1898-O is among the more plentiful dates in the entire Morgan Dollar series. The release of countless examples by the Treasury Department in the 1960s included numerous prooflike coins. Unfortunately, most of these were abraded enough to grade no finer MS65. Today, the prooflike 1898-O Morgan is rare as a Superb Gem.
