The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
While the total mintage of the 1874 is not on the large side for the Trade Dollar series, it is impressive for a coin of this type from the Philadelphia Mint. In fact, the delivery of 987,100 Trade Dollars in 1874 is the second highest for this coinage facility after that produced in 1877. As one might expect for an early date Trade Dollar, the 1874 saw very little domestic circulation. Scarce in circulated grades, the '74-P is undeniably rare in Mint State.
