The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
In 1941, the Philadelphia Mint coined 15,412 Proof Walking Liberty half dollars, some with Adolph Weinman's monogram on the reverse and others without his monogram. In his Complete Encyclopedia, Walter Breen explained that the latest Proof examples, struck in November and December have bold initials, while the earlier ones from January through October were produced from lapped dies without the designer's initials. Alternatively, the Proof dies may have been made without Weinman's initials. Careful examination fails to show any other evidence of lapping on the reverse die. Perhaps the coinage hubs lacked the initials when they produced the individual coinage dies. Examples struck in 1942, as well as some earlier Proofs, have also been identified without the AW monogram.
