The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
While not the most carefully produced issue in this series, the '17-S Obverse is not the strike rarity that it was once marketed as. Once heralded as the 'King of the Walkers,' the 1917-S Obverse is still rightly considered to be one the keys to this eminently collectible series in the higher circulated and Mint State grades. In fact, only the 1919-S is more challenging to locate at the finer levels of Mint State preservation. This issue's original mintage is a modest total of 952,000 coins.
