The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The initial enthusiasm that collectors had for the novel Barber half dollar design, as evidenced by the generous mintage of 1,245 pieces allotted to the silver proofs of 1892, was either exceedingly short-lived or a figment of a Mint official's imagination. Just 792 pieces were struck for the proof halves of 1893, the same as the rest of the silver proofs.
