Description & Analysis

Using silver mined from the rich Comstock Lode, the Philadelphia Mint churned out impressive numbers of Half Dollars from 1875 through 1877. These coins were meant to retire the hated fifty cent 'shinplasters' from the Civil War era, and, indeed, most of the 8.4 million coins delivered in 1876 entered circulation. Nonetheless, enough Mint State specimens have survived that type collectors will have little difficulty locating coins that grade up to an including the MS64 level. As a Gem, this issue is scarce.
