The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
While a small west coast bank hoard accounts for the availability of Mint State 1874-S quarters today, fate was not as kind to the 1874-S half dollar. A heavily circulated issue, Mint State examples are not easy to locate with any regularity. An important type coin that owes its existence to the despised Mint Act of 1873.
