The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1857-O Half Dollar meets all the requirements of a classic condition rarity. Its mintage of 818,000 pieces is a bit lower than some of its New Orleans Mint contemporaries, but hardly small enough to signal anything out of the ordinary, and its relative availability in circulated condition continues through the XF grade level. However, demand for silver coinage must have been very high in the Antebellum South, as precious few examples appear to have survived in AU and Uncirculated grades.
