The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
While its quarter counterpart has earned the respect of advanced collectors, the 1856-O Liberty Seated half dollar is often referred to as one of the more common silver issues of the late 1850s. With a sizeable mintage of 2,658,000 pieces, this conclusion certainly holds true through the lower Mint State grade levels.
