The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The original design for the Seated Liberty Half Dollar featured small digits in the date, a design that was used from 1839 through early 1842, later in 1842, the Medium Date die came into use. The original reverse design also had small letters in the legends on the reverse. This reverse design has been identified on all 1839 Seated Liberty, 1840 (P), 1840-O, 1841, and 1841-O Half Dollars, as well as on some 1842-O examples. The Small Date, Small Letters 1842-O Half is scarce with Wiley-Bugert rating it a high R.4 in all grades.
