The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1896 New Orleans quarter, coming from a mintage of 4.484 million pieces, is available in the lower circulated grades, but becomes very scarce in the Fine and above levels of preservation. David Lawrence, in his second edition The Complete Guide to Barber Quarters, provides the following rarity levels for the '96-O: F/VF, R.4, XF, R.4, AU, R.5, and MS, R.6.
