The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The onset of the Civil War in 1861 set in motion a series of events that resulted in limited Seated Quarter production for every year of that defining conflict. Whereas a sizeable total of 4.8 million coins emerged from the Philadelphia Mint in 1861, that same facility delivered just 932,550 Quarters in 1862. While the latter issue is not as rare as the 1863, 1864, and 1865 in business strike format, such examples are still elusive in most grades. The difficulty that most specialists experience with locating an attractive Mint State '62-P Quarter has prompted many to acquire a high grade proof in its stead.
