Description & Analysis

The 1868-S continues the tradition of scarcity from the West coast facility in spite of a mintage that should indicate greater availability. The end of the Civil War seemed to have no impact on the high attrition rate of S-mint silver coins, as indeed they continued to circulate just as heavily after the War as they had during it. The 1868-S had a mintage of only 96,000 pieces, but its availability in better grades is equal to a Philadelphia Mint coin with only a fraction of that production.
