The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
This is the first dime struck at the newly opened Denver Mint, in its first year of operation. This Mint had its beginning in the days of the Colorado gold discovery and the Clark, Gruber & Co. Bank and Mint. The Government purchased the property in 1863, but it remained idle until the new Mint building was erected just after the turn of the century. Since 1906, the Denver Mint has enjoyed nearly continuous operation for a full century.
