Description & Analysis

Like most Philadelphia Mint half dimes of the 1863-67 period, this very low mintage issue is more often found in Mint State than in problem-free circulated grades. That is not to say that it's common, as the 1865 half dime is rare in all grades, with the proofs being far more often seen.

The coin illustrated is typical of Mint State survivors in that it displays die-clash impressions and is faintly prooflike. The dies were simply not run long enough to develop the frosty texture usually associated with currency strikes.
