Description & Analysis

A steady supply of copper planchets already upset and ready to coin from Boulton in England permitted a very large mintage of cents in 1802. Thus was born some 20 die marriages for this date, most of which were fairly consistent in style. The die steel seems to have improved, too, as there are only two rare marriages from this entire run: NC-1 and NC-2. S-234 (photos) is common and makes for a good type coin.

One anomly resulted from the use of one of 1801's erroneous reverse dies having the fraction as 1/000. This variety is likewise common, but it brings a modest premium for its greater interest factor.
