Upcoming Champion Hong Kong Auction Offers Chinese Numismatic Rarities

Posted on 10/12/2009

The upcoming Champion Hong Kong, China Auction features a rich selection of Chinese coins and banknotes certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and Paper Money Guaranty (PMG).

Among the auction listings are Chinese Empire minor Silver and Copper coins from the noted Shanghai Chang Family Collection. Also presented is a group of Copper Pattern coins from an American collection, including an extremely rare Szechuan Ten Cash Pattern, whose heritage may include the Berlin Mint.

The auction will be held on October 25, 2009 at the Sheraton Hong Kong, China Hotel. More information can be found on Champion’s multi-lingual website, www.cghka.com and the auction can be seen at www.liveauctioneers.com/catalog/19683.

Among the many coin highlights are the following:

CHINA-SHANTUNG 1926 Dragon and Phoenix

These intriguing gold patterns were issued under the warlord, Chang Tsung-ch'ang (Zhang Zongchang), who was military governor of Shantung from April 1925 till 1928. Kann notes that examples of these Shantung $10 and $20 gold patterns were owned by himself, Chicago collector, Don C. Keefer, and by R. F. Schermerhorn. When Kann's collection came up for auction in 1971, it contained two examples of each value - an uncirculated version and a proof version. Less than ten examples of each are thought to exist. These pieces have been off the market since their last appearance in a 1993 Hong Kong auction.
